Constitution
Article I: Name
The name of this organization shall be the Inter Greek Council of the State University of New York College at Geneseo hereinafter referred to as the IGC of SUNY Geneseo.
Article II: Vision
The vision of the Inter Greek Council of the State University of New York College at Geneseo is to celebrate lifelong fraternal and sororal bonds while continuing to grow through academics, campus involvement, community service, leadership and social engagements; while further recognizing the responsibility of each member and member organization to serve as role models and promote these opportunities to the College community to further its development.
Article III: Purpose
The object of the Inter Greek Council shall be to develop, maintain and promote fraternity and sorority life and Inter-Greek relations at a high level of accomplishment and in so doing to:
(1) Recognized Organizations
The privileges associated with membership:
(1) Authority
The Inter Greek Council Executive Board shall be the legislative and governing body of the recognized Greek organizations shall have the following powers:
(1) Term of Office
The executive board shall serve for a period of one year, from May to May and be elected at the second to last meeting of the Spring semester. The winner of the election shall be determined by a majority vote of members present. Each organization may cast one vote for each position.
(2) Eligibility
The Inter Greek Council reserves the right to set and enforce bylaws and rules in addition to THIS constitution.

Article III: Purpose
The object of the Inter Greek Council shall be to develop, maintain and promote fraternity and sorority life and Inter-Greek relations at a high level of accomplishment and in so doing to:
- A. Provide opportunities for member organizations to participate in programs designed for community betterment.
- B. Foster unity among its member fraternities and sororities, in order to perpetuate the Greek ideals and respect for the principles on which the Greek-lettered community was founded.
- C. Consider the goals and ideals of member groups as continually applicable to campus and personal life.
- D. Advise the chapters and provide assistance to them through the administration of the Recruitment process.
- E. Act as a liaison with SUNY Geneseo, its administration and its affiliated organizations.
(1) Recognized Organizations
- A. Membership of IGC of SUNY Geneseo shall consist of those fraternities and sororities who are affiliated with one of the five subdivisions of the Geneseo Greek Community and have recognition from the College, these divisions shall be :
- a. Local Fraternity
- b. National Fraternity
- c. Local Sorority
- d. College Panhellenic
- e. National Pan-Hellenic
- B. Membership of the IGC of SUNY Geneseo shall not consist of those fraternities or sororities recognized by the college as professional service organizations.
- A. Remain in financial good-standing with the Council
- B. Remain in good conduct standing with the College and with the Council
- C. Promote a positive image to the Geneseo community
- D. Attend all Council Meetings and events mandated by the Council
The privileges associated with membership:
- A. The right to initiate amendments to the IGC Constitution and Bylaws.
- B. The right to seat delegates and have a voice and vote on matters before the Council.
- C. The right to hold office on the IGC Executive or Standards Boards.
- D. The right to participate in all IGC meetings and activities as specified.
- E. The right to request mandatory involvement in chapter events with six weeks notification and approval of the General Council
- A. Any chapter that is SUSPENDED or UNRECOGNIZED by the College will have their privileges of membership revoked until suspension is lifted or rechartered.
- B. Any chapter that is pending investigation or in interim suspension will have their membership and privileges of IGC put on hold.
- a. The right to hold office on the IGC Executive Board will be suspended on a case by case situation determined by the rest of the Executive Board Members and Coordinator of Greek Affairs.
(1) Authority
The Inter Greek Council Executive Board shall be the legislative and governing body of the recognized Greek organizations shall have the following powers:
- A. To set Greek Council dues and fees.
- a. Fines for missing IGC general assembly meetings is outlined in Article V: (2) b. Being below the set percent of members, mandatory attendance for the following events will result in a specific fine:
- i. Anna’s Ball - $5 fine in addition to price of ticket for every member missing
- ii. Relay for Life- $15 fee per person not in attendance (TBD)
- iii. Greek Week Events- $5 fine in addition to price of ticket for every member missing
- iv. Anti-Hazing Assembly- $50 per new member educator not in attendance, $10 per new member not in attendance
- v. New Member Conference- $10 per new member not in attendance
- c. The Executive Board has the right set dues and fines to other events, assignments and member mandatory activities not listed above.
- a. Fines for missing IGC general assembly meetings is outlined in Article V: (2) b. Being below the set percent of members, mandatory attendance for the following events will result in a specific fine:
- B. To establish minimum participation of 15% of member per organizations for IGC events, unless stated otherwise
- C. To provide desired services to and for member fraternities and sororities.
- D. To represent member fraternities and sororities to the College, the student body, and the community.
- E. The IGC Board has the right to utilize the aforementioned dues and fines towards IGC related expenses. These include, but are not limited to: educational events, leadership events, programming events, and philanthropy events.
- a. Organizations in good standing with IGC may apply for one monetary grant up to $100 per semester, until the grant pool of $1,000 has been exhausted.
- i. Dates and deadlines for grant applications will be determined by the Executive Board.
- ii. Requirements for consideration: grant must be used for events open to the campus or IGC community and must adhere to the Standards of Conduct.
- iii. If the grant pool is not exhausted by the end of the semester, it can be donated to the charity of the delegates choosing (via ⅔ vote) or will be carried over into the next semester’s grant fund (TBD)
- a. Organizations in good standing with IGC may apply for one monetary grant up to $100 per semester, until the grant pool of $1,000 has been exhausted.
- A. The Inter Greek Council Executive Board shall meet weekly. These meetings shall be held prior to the general assembly meetings each Thursday.
- B. The Inter Greek Council general assembly shall meet in a general membership meeting each Thursday of the academic year. This meeting shall immediately follow the executive board meeting.
- C. Every member organization must have a delegate present at each Inter Greek Council general assembly meeting. IGC Delegates must have been an initiated member for one full semester. Member organizations must have one full-time delegate. Member organizations may have an alternative delegate attend general assembly meetings in the instance that the elected full-time delegate can not attend.
- D. Absences from meetings shall acquire a gradual penalty.
- a. Meetings
- i. A single absence per academic semester will acquire no monetary penalty.
- ii. A second absence per academic semester will result in a fine of $10.00.
- iii. A third absence per academic semester will result in an additional fine of $25.00.
- iv. A fourth absence per academic semester will result in an additional fine of $50.00 and the review of recognition status by the executive board, which may result in removal of recognition.
- v. An organization may submit a written (email,text, or groupme message) request for excusal for meetings to the President of the Inter Greek Council prior to the general assembly meeting. The President must reply to the requesting organization within 24 hours of receiving the request.
- b. Activities and Mandatory Events
- i. Any activity or event deemed mandatory by IGC will incur a penalty to be determined by the executive board. This penalty will be announced prior to the event and may include fines, service requirements, etc.
- c. Valid Excuses for missing general assembly meetings:
- i. Death in the family
- ii. Working
- iii. ROTC member
- iv. Non-negotiable family functions
- v. Group meeting pertaining to class
- vi. Religious observances vii. Varsity sports
- viii. Personal interviews for job/internship
- ix. Being home with family
- a. Meetings
- A. Only delegates of recognized member fraternities and sororities in good financial standing may vote in General Membership meetings.
- B. Motions shall pass by a majority of votes cast.
- C. All votes shall be cast by a silent ballot is called
- D. The President of the Inter Greek Council shall cast a secret ballot prior to the ballot tally which will be counted only in the case of a tie.
(1) Term of Office

(2) Eligibility
- A. All applicants shall be members of one of the subsidiary groups of which are eligible to hold the respective positions as outlined in elections.
- B. Applicants must maintain a 2.5 GPA for the entirety of board membership
- C. Applicants must remain in good conduct standing with SUNY Geneseo
- D. To apply for president, the applicant with the most leadership experience will be preferred.
- a. IGC and Greek Letter Organization leadership are taken in the highest consideration but not required.
- A. Those interested for a position must submitted an application to the IGC email ([email protected] ) by the designated due date (typically third week of April)
- B. Members of the IGC executive board and Greek Life Advisor will vote on the most qualified candidates (2) that will be presented to the general assembly, and voted on a slate.
- a. If a position only has one applicant, they will follow the same guidelines as other applicants
- C. Applicants running for positions must be notified ahead of time to prepare a speech
- D. Applicant’s applications must be shared with the Greek Community prior to the date of elections
- E. Speeches must be presented to the general assembly before a silent ballot presented
- F. The executive board meeting following elections, there will be a transition meeting to initiate new board
- A. The structure of the new board would be to serve as a programming board for all social fraternities and sororities registered with the college, and recognized by the office of fraternal life:
- a. President
- i. Consistent and thorough communication with the advisor
- ii. Supervise all programming chair positions
- iii. Create and manage the board's budget
- iv. Serve as the main administrator for all financial processes
- b. Fraternity Programming Chair
- i. Consistent and thorough communication with the officers of all fraternities
- ii. Coordinate and collaborate on events, schedules, marketing, and other strategies for fraternity recruitment
- iii. Plan recruitment and other workshops for Fraternal groups
- c. Sorority Programming Chair
- i. Consistent and thorough communication with the officers of all local sororities
- ii. Coordinate and collaborate on events, schedules, marketing, and other strategies for local sorority recruitment
- iii. Collaborate with the Panhellenic Vice President of Recruitment to ensure alignment and minimize conflicts between Panhellenic and local sorority rush/recruitment processes
- iv. Plan recruitment and other workshops for Sororal groups
- d. Educational Programming Chair
- i. Coordinate and collaborate on educational programs, including but not limited to: the Hazing Prevention Workshop for new members, the Hazing Prevention Workshop for chapter officers, the New Member Conference, National Hazing Prevention Week, SafeZone training, Kognito training, Naloxone training.
- ii. Enforce fines associated with events
- iii. Meets monthly with AOD
- e. Philanthropy and Service Programming Chair
- i. Consistent and thorough communication with the Coordinator of Student Leadership, Volunteerism, and Service
- ii. Coordinate and collaborate on philanthropic and service programs, including but not limited to: Anna's Ball (Spring), Anna's Wish fundraiser (fall), Relay for Life, Knight's First Day of Service, MLK Day of Service, and National Service Week.
- iii. Enforce fines associated with events
- iv. Plan one special project with other board members per year
- f. Special Programs Chair
- i. Coordinate and collaborate on special programs within the IGC community and campus community, including but not limited to: Weeks of Welcome, Cultural Harmony Week, Springfest/Gennyfest, "Greek Week", chapter and IGC co-sponsored events.
- ii. Enforce fines associated with events
- iii. Plan one special project with other board members per year
- a. President
The Inter Greek Council reserves the right to set and enforce bylaws and rules in addition to THIS constitution.
(1) Reviewing
- A. The IGC Constitution and Bylaws must be reviewed/revised when seen fit
- B. Revisions can be suggested at any time by any of the following:
- a. A member of the IGC Executive Board
- b. A member organization
- c. The Coordinator of Greek Affairs
- a. Proposal for amendments to THIS Constitution and its bylaws or establishment of new bylaws shall be distributed to the representatives of all recognized member organizations (both FULL and ASSOCIATE) at least TWO weeks prior to the date for voting on the Amendment. Amendments and bylaws shall be nominated, discussed at the following meeting, and voted upon the following meeting. Amendments to existing bylaws or the establishment of new bylaws may only be done with 2/3 (two thirds) agreement of all member organizations in good standing. This provision is made with the exceptions of rules that specifically may be passed by a simple majority vote for the Inter Greek Council Executive under this constitution.
(1) Potential New Members
- A. Must meet all eligibility requirements determined by the college to rush or accept a bid to an organization. These include but may not be limited to:
- i. Maintaining an overall GPA of 2.0
- ii. Being a second semester student having earned 12 credits at Geneseo
- B. Transfer Students with a 3.25 GPA may appeal to the Coordinator of Fraternal Life
- C. Must not accept a bid or any offer of membership to an organization not in good conduct standing with the IGC or College; further outlined in the Student Organization Handbook
