Standards of Conduct Bylaws
Be it resolved that the following document shall be known as the:
Standards of Conduct Bylaws of the Inter-Greek Council at the State University of New York College at Geneseo
Article I: Purpose
The Vision of the Inter-Greek Council states its goals as: to celebrate life-long fraternal and sororal bonds while continuing to grow through academics, campus involvement, community service, leadership and social engagements; while further recognizing the responsibility of each member and member organization to serve as role models and promote these opportunities to the College community to further its development.
To comply with this vision, the Inter-Greek Council shall uphold certain STANDARDS OF CONDUCT among its members and member organizations. They shall be noted as follows.
Article II:
Support of Recognized/Registered Organizations IGC organizations support other students and student groups who seek to have a formal relationship with the College, who follow appropriate channels for being registered, and who uphold the policies of the College, as such:
Each organization shall send its new member class to the New Member Conference held following Bid Day. New members who cannot attend this conference must attend the conference held the following semester.

Article II:
Support of Recognized/Registered Organizations IGC organizations support other students and student groups who seek to have a formal relationship with the College, who follow appropriate channels for being registered, and who uphold the policies of the College, as such:
- A. IGC member organizations are prohibited from sponsoring, co-sponsoring, or hosting events or activities, whether on or off campus, with any student organization/group that has lost its SUNY Geneseo recognition, has not complied with the College recognition/registration process, or is not endorsed or supported by an official department of the College. This includes, but is not limited to: social events, recruitment events, intramural teams, fundraising or service activities.
- B. IGC member organizations and their members may fully support individual students who are doing work/projects associated with internships/employment and groups or projects that are endorsed by the College (such as Geneseo First Response, Geneseo Interfaith Service Project, academic activities).
- C. IGC member organizations and their members may fully support student groups who are in the registration/recognition process who have received approval from the Student Life department and/or the Office of Fraternal Life to engage in such activities.
- A. Possession, use and/or consumption of alcoholic beverages while on Chapter-identified premises during an official or unofficial fraternity or sorority event or in any situations sponsored or endorsed by the chapter must be in compliance with any and all laws of the Village, State and College. Chapter- identified promises include any property owned, operated, or rented by members of the organization or which would be understood to be associated with the organization by members of the campus community.
- B. Chapter members collectively or individually shall not purchase alcoholic beverages to serve, to sell, or to give for use to any minor under the legal drinking age.
- C. The possession, sale and/or use of any illegal drugs or controlled substances at any house identified with the Chapter, any chapter-sponsored event, or any event that an observer would associate with the fraternity or sorority, are strictly prohibited.
- D. Events hosted at bars in the community will be the total responsibility of the owner of the bar. Fraternities and sororities will not provide bartenders, bouncers or other assistants in the supervision of the event: supervision will be the sole responsibility of the bar owner. Such events are not permitted as fund raising activities.
- E. All recruitment functions associated with any Chapter will be alcohol free.
- F. No member shall force another person to participate in drinking as part of the activities of the Chapter.
- G. No alcohol shall be supplied at any new member program activity of the Chapter.
- H. Use of alcohol, by those of legal drinking age, within any house identified with a fraternity or sorority shall be in compliance with the alumni charter or rental agreement if they exist.
- A. Any acts of violence committed by an individual fraternity brother or sorority sister must be address within the organization’s standards/accountability process. Those failing to do so will face conduct action by IGC.
- B. Fraternities and sororities recognized by the College will not tolerate, condone, or engage in any form of sexually abusive behavior on the part of their members whether physical, mental or emotional. This is to include any actions on or off campus, which are demeaning to men or women including, but not limited to, date rape, gang rape or physical or verbal harassment.
- A. No Chapter shall engage in or endorse hazing activities on or off campus.
- Hazing is defined as: Any activity taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off chapter premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities and situations may include paddling in any form; creation of excessive fatigue or physical or psychological stress; morally degrading or humiliating activities; or late work sessions, which interfere with scholastic activities.
- A. The College has no jurisdiction over off-campus residences owned or rented by Greek organizations. It is in the best interest of all students living in these facilities to be aware of all local and state fire, health and safety codes, laws or rules. Appropriate inspectors from the Village or Town of Geneseo should be contacted for assistance when there are problems or identifiable hazards. Greek organizations should strive to build a positive relationship with their property owner, conduct regular safety inspections, and adopt emergency plans.
